Born and raised in Indiana, Collette Spears received a BFA in Ceramics and a BS in Psychology from Ball State University. She spent a year as a Resident at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and 2 years as a Resident with the Carbondale Clay Center. She has also worked as an Educational Assistant at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and as an assistant to kiln builder Ted Neal for about 5 years, helping to build over a dozen kilns all over North America. She makes utilitarian ceramic work with focus on design and craft, and she is self-taught in lace tatting.
