Do you listen to the voices in your head? Do we all have an autobiographical part of our mind that's whirring along like a high-rpm motor, churning out an internal narrative of hopes and anxieties like a never ending ticker tape? Or is that just me?

Mine is great at anticipating and solving problems when there's a defined goal but rapidly pulls me down when there isn’t. One reason I've gravitated toward wilderness sports is because it gives that part of me the opportunity to be invaluable on the way up and then to power off and hand the controls to muscle memory when pointing skis or tires back downhill

Things like riding bikes require so much focus, it's impossible to be in peak performance flow state while listening to that chatter. Action sports quiet my mind through brute force. The awe of being in big nature, speed, turns where I feel the g forces, and sensing risk all are very effective, but also harder for me to access after breaking my back. It's been a struggle for me to learn to moderate that ticker-tape chatter of thought without intense stimulation. But having some control of the whirring motor seems like the only way to steer myself out of depression nosedives

The stream of self talk messaging is fascinating if I can hold it in curious attention. Is it the unconscious mind communicating with our autobiographical consciousness? Or glimpses of the belief systems that make up my conscious mind?
